Secret Footballer revealed by book

Dave Kitson touted as ‘The Secret Footballer’ after book revelations

Former Reading and Stoke City striker Dave Kitson could be the face behind The Guardian's popular weekly column The Secret Footballer
A huge hint that Kitson - now with Oxford United - is the face behind the mysterious player has been dropped in new book Tales from the Secret Footballer.
The mystery man reveals a story about being on the verge of an England call-up under Italian coach Fabio Capello in 2008 that seems to reveal his identity.
"A few years earlier, when Capello had taken the England job, he had held a press conference in which he'd made it clear that it was time for the England squad to grow up, " The Secret Footballer writes.
"Misbehaviour would no longer be tolerated. A day later I
received a call from a journalist friend who said he had it from two good sources at the FA that I was in Capello's England squad.
"Not for the first time, I celebrated too early and far, far too well. This time, it proved to be a monumental, career-defining mistake.
"The next morning my name was everywhere – newspapers, TV, the internet – except on the list of Capello's England squad.
"Until this point my career had been going up and up and up, and it isn't an exaggeration to say that at that exact moment my love for football, my desire to play and, ultimately, my career fell off a cliff. Still, it makes for a great story."
Kitson, 33, was charged with drink-driving only weeks before Capello named his first England squad for a friendly with Switzerland in February 2008.
The book also claims The Secret Footballer is a Tottenham fan who travelled to watch Spurs face AC Milan in 2011.
Kitson is a self-confessed fan and has also spoken recently about holidays in Denmark with the book suggesting the Secret Footballer enjoyed trips to Legoland in the Scandinavian country.
