Best Lego sets 2013




1. Grand-Prix Racer

You’ll probably never be able to drive a real F1 car, so the next best thing, surely, is it to build a Grand Prix racer out of blocks of Lego. Super detailed, this model features an opening engine cover, adjustable spoiler and realistic steering, plus it measures a whopping two foot long. What’s more is you can even pop in a Lego motor and increase your fun no end.

2. Star Wars Super Star Destroyer

Darth Vader’s home away from home, the Super Star Destroyer, has been faithfully rebuilt in Lego, weighing over 3.5 kilos and measuring 124.5cm in length, this model is something to behold. It also is far from cheap, costing £350, but for that price you do get a stand to place your creation on and five minifigures – including Darth Vader himself.

3. Star Wars Ewok Village

Many criticise the cute little bear like creatures that inhabit the forest moon of Endor, but c’mon, when they’re recreated so fantastically in blocks of Lego, what’s not to love? There’s 16 minifigures in this set, along with a speeder and the beautifully detailed Ewok treehouse.

4. Tower Bridge

The classic London landmark looks great in Lego, full of detail and accurate touches – a true opening draw-bridge for one. It’s over
a 100cm in length, making this a truly mammoth build and one you’ll never want to take down. Red double-decker buses, a black cab and a yellow truck all add to the authenticity.

5. Star Wars Millennium Falcon

Lego and Star Wars is a partnership that has spawned so many great models and games, yet the Millenium Falcon is probably our favourite purely down to the intricate details. They’ve included a fully kitted out interior, laser cannons and you can remove the cockpit cover, to get right up close to Chewie and Han. Measuring 38cm wide and 10cm tall, this model will sit proudly on your mantle – much better than some old vase.

6. Sydney Opera House

Lego can be designed for adults too, with no set proving that point more than this recreation of the Sydney Opera House. Constructed out of tan bricks and sitting on a blue plate, this model is almost photo realistic.

7. Minecraft

Minecraft seems ripe for a Lego version, as it’s already pretty blocky in its original form. Again chosen by CUSOO, this model has a particularly smooth finish to it, mimicking the actual Minecraft pixelated look down to a tee. 8. Jabba’s Sail Barge

If there’s one place you don’t want to be in the Star Wars universe it’s aboard the sail barge of Jabba the Hut – as Princess Leia will testify. Jabba himself looks great in Lego form, as does the barge, which can be opened up to reveal another area to play in.

9. The Batcave

Classic comic book locations don’t come anymore iconic that Batman’s lair, the Batcave and Lego obviously seem to agree. This model depicts a scene between Batman, Robin and the Baaaannnnnneeeeee (say that in your best Tom Hardy voice) yet set in the classic DC Universe, rather than the one seen in Christopher Nolan’s trilogy. There are little details everywhere, from the lift where you can transform Bruce Wayne into the Batman, along with the section devoted to Bat-Gear.

10. Lego Star Wars Advent Calendar

In only a mere matter of months the Christmas countdown will begin and, as they have done for the past few years, Lego will be producing an advent calendar. This Star Wars themed version features a new figure every day, from the December 1st up until Christmas eve.

11. Bane vs Batman

“I broke you. How have you come back?” Bane definitely proved to be a great villain in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, with a load of memorable lines to boot. The best way to enjoy this Lego set is to put on your best Bane voice and just go for it. Figures of Batman and Commissioner Gordon are included as well.

12. Mindstorms EV3

Far from sticking a few faded coloured bricks together, the newest addition to the Mindstorms line-up is a robot that you can build, program and control yourself. Comprising of a programmable brick, an ARM9 processor and a variety of sensors and remotes, this is about the most customisable Lego robot we can think of. There’s a downloadable app, for both iOS and Android, which works as another remote and it even has included Wi-Fi for connecting to the internet. Now, that’s one tech fuelled robot.

13. The DeLorean from Back to the Future

Lego Cuusoo is almost like Kickstarter for plastic bricks, allowing fans to create their own models and hope enough people like them so it can be put in production. This particular model, the classic DeLorean from Back to the Future, is one of the lucky ones. Mini figures of Marty McFly and Doc Brown are included, and the DeLorean itself looks great, packed with intricate details and little touches fans will love. One for collectors, we’d say.

14. Lego Marvel Quinjet Aerial Battle

Lego has now infested the Marvel Universe of superheroes, bringing some classic Avenger’s scenes to plastic model form. This particular set takes place mid-air, with the Quinjet – a plane type thing engaging in battle with the villainous Loki. There are five mini-figures included, multiple customisable sections and a special prison to house Loki once he’s captured.

15. Technic Mobile Crane MK II

Lego claims this is one of the biggest and most complex Technic models ever created, and going by the looks of it, we tend to agree. This motorised mobile crane behemoth has eight wheels, five axles and a detailed V8 motor with actual moving pistons. The crane itself can be extended to nearly 80cm and there are even instructions on how to build a completely different model included. This is Lego building, on an industrial scale.

16. Mercedes-Benz Unimog U 400

Pneumatically powered, articulated cranes and Lego don’t often go hand in hand, but in this instance, they work perfectly together. Modelled on a Mercedes-Benz Unimog, this vehicle packs in Lego Power Functions, a detailed engine with moving pistons and even realistic suspension.

17. Lord of the Rings - The Tower of Orthanc

Standing 73cm tall, this faithful recreation of the Tower of Orthanc from the epic Lord of the Rings, is one of the finest Lego builds we’ve seen. Naturally, both Gandalf and Saruman make appearances, as do the tree like Ents and you even get a great eagle to play with.

Vehicles have always been our favourite thing to construct out of Lego and especially ones that could fly. This rescue helicopter is fantastically detailed and just looks heaps for fun to swoosh around with. The rotor spins, the winch lowers and you can aid the injured Lego people with ease thanks to the opening bay door.
