Former TV executive Nancy Tellem is working with Microsoft
to deliver new original TV series in 2014.
Microsoft's first original series will launch on the Xbox
Live and videogame platform in early 2014, according to Variety.
“We’re hoping we will
be able to put something up in the first quarter, at minimum second quarter,”
said Nancy Tellem, president of entertainment and digital media. “I’m
incredibly ambitious and impatient."
Tellem came on board in 2012 to produce original content for
Xbox 360 and Xbox One owners.
“I’m incredibly
ambitious and impatient,” said Tellem, who
took the job to produce original content for the Xbox platform.
Because of the time it’s taken to develop the first slate of
series, including a high-profile project based around “Halo,” with Steven
Spielberg producing, has been “slower,” but “reflecting on what we’ve done and
what lies ahead, it’s been pretty good.”
Microsoft also plans to co-produce live events like Miss
Teen USA, Spike Video Game Awards, etc.
When Microsoft does finally go live with its original
series, more than 48 million Xbox Live subscribers and 72 million Xbox consoles
around the world will have access to the content.
This gives Xbox a subsequent advantage over other streaming
services, such as Netflix, which started from scratch upon launch.
"We aren’t Netflix, we aren’t Amazon, we’re a different
animal,” Tellem told Variety, while emphasising that today is an amazing time
for Hollywood and the Tech industry to come together. "The content and
what we’re building will be an important part of our future.”
